Presentation
Incorporated in 1998 through the initiative of some citizens of Douglastown, the Douglas Community Center has allowed the recuperation and the renovation of the village school, the St.Patrick Central School (1956), a 3 storey building with a surface area of 1650 m2. Since that time the Center offers services and activities for the some 650 people almost equally split between the English and French communities.

From then to now
Douglastown obtained its canonic status as a catholic parish in 1860; 20 years later, Douglastown officially became a municipality. At the beginning, lands of the Douglas County were devised to be offered to the Loyalists who were leaving the American rebellion; finally a few decided to stay in the Gaspe area. Some of the oldest families are Kennedy, Walsh, Briand, Morris, Holland, McDonald and the Rooney; most of them represent the Irish roots of the community. Some 900 persons were registered in mid-XIX; a hundred years later the population was still the same but the French Canadian community grew from 4 to 20 %. As in many other peninsula villages, the main economic activities were fisheries (cod, lobster, salmon) and forestry. Douglastown became part of the city of Gaspe in 1979. To know more…
